DEB MASSA: SAINT AND SINNER.
For all the details about the festival and a map visit:
The Beginning phase is always a challenge. I stand in front of a blank canvas asking myself if I am able to move past the paralyzing fear of failure, (yes I fear failing even before I begin) and will the right side of my brain to set my body and spirit in motion. For the DEB MASSA: Saint and Sinner series I began by sketching out the face with simple strokes of paint in the colors I had used in the original painting. I did about seven of these over the course of a weekend. The photo below is the result, or in thiscase, the beginning.
This was third to last painting that was completed for the Saint and Sinner series. Painting the same image and style for over two months, I had been feeling like my work was tightening up. I thought to myself, Deb, this is your work, you can do whatever the hell you want. You don't paint for your parents or your fans, or the art critics, you paint because you can. If anyone is going to make it beautiful or trash it, it's gonna be you.
Deb is an Independent Teaching Artist from Los Angeles; self taught; working in mixed media, currently residing in Greenville, SC. Having the good fortune of working from her home studio, Deb is able to practice daily with new ideas incorporating experimentation and interplay of materials without getting caught up in any limitations of medium, style or discipline. One can find acrylics as a basis for liquid metals; hardware cloth scrubbed into a painting, human teeth and hair included in an assemblage or collage, salvaged and found objects worked into a sculpture. While keeping her own work in progress, Deb also teaches classes, workshops and holds demonstrations for children and adults. When she’s not inciting the muse in her students, working in her studio, or perfecting her farmers tan, she can be found gleaning the the vast landscapes, nooks and crannies of the world for inspiration.
I create new original works of art daily-check back often!
